Academic Departments - Design Technology - Resistant Materials

The course will familiarise girls with the tools and equipment needed to make their own designs of items as diverse as pocket sized puzzles and items of furniture. In designing Pupils learn to use CAD software such as Pro Desktop and Art Cam as well as learning manual drawing techniques. In manufacturing they are taught to use a variety of hand tools and power tools safely and skillfully.

The emphasis is very much on learning through experience with a mini GCSE  style project at the end of key stage 3 where girls can demonstrate both their  practical and presentational skills.

Research involves visits to places to obtain information and inspiration. The GCSE group, for instance, visit IKEA to investigate flat pack furniture. Some projects involve working in small groups as a mini company, where they compete with other groups for prizes.

Although we feature topics that you might expect girls to be naturally interested in such as furniture and interior design, we also include the manufacture of working models. Most recently this took the form of the trebuchet (a medieval type siege catapult) although it should be emphasised that the projectiles are restricted to ping pong balls!
