Academic Departments - Drama and Theatre Studies
“Like theatre, drama in school can unlock the use of imagination, intellect, empathy and courage…”
At St David’s, Drama is taught weekly to all girls in years 7 to 9. In these lessons, girls study a range of texts and styles, and learn skills vital to the development of both their drama performance and communication skills.
Drama is a popular subject at both GCSE and AS/A level and the department enjoys excellent results. Lessons are held in the purpose built drama studio with exam performances and school productions staged in the newly refurbished Performing Arts Centre.

Additional LAMDA lessons, leading to recognised qualifications, are available to complement and develop the acting and vocal skills begun in group Drama lessons.

A varied and exciting programme of extra curricular activities enhances and builds on the skills learnt in drama lessons and girls from all years are encouraged to participate. Recent major productions include ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, ‘Beauty and the Beast’, ‘As You Like It’ and ‘The Boyfriend’. |
All senior students participate in their houses for The Osborne Trophy Drama competition.
There are numerous opportunities to become involved in the technical and production side of performances, using the excellent sound and lighting facilities in the Performing Arts Centre.
Regular theatre trips offer opportunities to experience a range of live performances, the most recent production being ‘Hairspray’ at the Shaftesbury Theatre, London.
The department is developing a new schedule of extra curricular activities and opportunities for 2009 including make up workshops and stage combat sessions, as well as residential theatre trips to work with professional actors in the West End and Europe. We also hope to introduce a programme of musical theatre and dance activities for senior girls in the near future.
