Academic Departments - English

A team of four teachers runs the English Department, with guidance from the EFL and Learning Support Departments in order to help meet the needs of students for whom English is an additional language, or those who need additional assistance.

Our aim is to provide a secure, happy and supportive environment in which it is possible for all students to achieve their full potential, whilst enjoying the whole learning experience. The study of English is fun, but also challenging, and we hope to stimulate the students into taking responsibility for their own learning.

We take the National Curriculum as our starting point and adapt it to suit the needs of our students, ensuring that we cover the necessary requirements in preparation for GCSE and A Level.

We cultivate the habit of reading and promote the enjoyment that can be derived from a good book! Our librarian, who makes recommendations and extends the resources of the library to suit the students' needs and interests, supports us in this.

English Literature is a very successful subject at AS and A2. The small teaching groups allow students to discuss their responses to texts openly and develop their critical thinking.

In addition to our focus on academic achievement, we encourage debating and public speaking (one of our greatest strengths) as well as regular theatre trips. These activities serve to enhance the curriculum and provide students with the breadth of experience needed to become independent thinkers and skilful communicators.
