Academic Departments - Food Technology

A thriving and popular subject at St David’s with a 100% A-C success rate at GCSE.

In Food Technology we aim to provide girls with a wide range of valuable life skills in a well equipped, purpose built Food Technology room.

We consider the development of good practical skills and knowledge of healthy eating to be of prime importance. We encourage this through discussion, practical tasks and market research studies. The girls also evaluate new and existing food products through taste testing exercises. We promote an active interest in current food issues, as well as an understanding of the many technological developments taking place in the Food Industry today. By doing this we hope to instil a life long interest in food and food production.

Girls in the Lower school are actively involved in producing a wide range of food products using basic cooking skills. They familiarise themselves with the main pieces of labour saving kitchen equipment as well as learning about food hygiene and safety. Two design projects are completed as preparation for GCSE coursework.

The examination course at GCSE allows the girls to refine and develop their practical skills. They choose their own products to cook in order to answer a particular design brief. There are also opportunities to visit food retail outlets and manufacturers to collect relevant information for their coursework project.

In the 6th form girls are given the opportunity to take a refresher “Basic Cookery” course as part of their life skills training.
