Academic Departments - Mathematics
The Mathematics Department at St David’s school comprises three teachers who are all enthusiastic and passionate about mathematics and they endeavour to pass this on to the pupils.
Mathematics is taught in a set of three classrooms all with projectors. There is also access available to 2 suites of computers. Both the projectors and the computers are vital tools in engaging pupils.
At GCSE we follow the Edexcel linear course with set 1 working towards the Higher tier and set 2 working towards the Foundation tier. Last year the pupils achieved a 90% pass rate. With 34% gaining A’s.
At GCE level we follow the Edexcel modular course. We have half the lower sixth taking A/S mathematics, and some girls are also taking Further mathematics A/S. The popularity of Mathematics at GCE level is a testimony to the standard of teaching and encouragement given to pupils within the department.
Throughout their time at St David’s the pupils are given the opportunity to take part in the UKMT Maths challenges (Junior / Intermediate / Senior) and many of them achieve the required standard to receive a certificate to recognise their ability.
The UKMT Team Maths Challenge is a national Maths competition for teams of four pupils in Years 8 and 9 (or equivalent). Our team did not come in the top 3 places last year but they did enjoy the day.
Our most able Year 10 and Year 11 pupils will be offered the chance to study for a module of A/S level maths to give them a better understanding of the demands of GCE level and also to encourage them to delve deeper into the fascinating world of mathematics.
The mathematics department also organise exciting outings and themed days for the pupils to help them broaden their understanding of how mathematics can be applied to solve a wide variety of problems.
