Academic Departments - Mathematics

The Mathematics Department at St David’s school comprises three full time teachers who are all enthusiastic and passionate about mathematics and they endeavour to pass this on to the pupils.

Mathematics is taught in a set of three classrooms one of which has an interactive whiteboard. There is also access available to a suite of computers. Both the whiteboard and the computers are vital tools in engaging pupils and keeping their interest.

At GCSE we follow the Edexcel linear course with set 1 working towards the Higher tier and sets 2 and 3 working towards the Intermediate tier. Last year the pupils achieved a 100% pass rate.

At GCE level we follow the Edexcel modular course. Last year the pupils performed very well with all of them gaining at least a C grade. The popularity of Mathematics at GCE level is a testimony to the standard of teaching and encouragement given to pupils within the department.

Throughout their time at St David’s the pupils are given the opportunity to take part in the UKMT Maths challenges (Junior / Intermediate / Senior) and many of them achieve the required standard to receive a certificate to recognise their ability.

The UKMT Team Maths Challenge is a national Maths competition for teams of four pupils in Years 8 and 9 (or equivalent). Our team did not come in the top 3 places last year but they did enjoy the day.

Our most able year 10 and 11 pupils will be offered the chance to study for an extra GCSE in Statistics which many find useful if they chose to study Statistics as part of their Mathematics GCE.
